Paw Print Impressions ~ How To's

Step 1 - Soften Clay

Taking smaller pieces of clay, start warming by kneading and working in your hands.  Add additional pieces of clay while continuing kneading until the desired amount of clay is soft and pliable. Do not add water or microwave the clay polymer.

Step 2 - Flatten Into Patty

Once you have softened the clay, roll into a ball.  You can now flatten and smooth the top of clay.  You can use a rolling pin or a smooth glass jar to press and smooth clay into a patty.

Size and Shape

How big your patty is determined by the size of paw print you will be taking.  Make sure your patty is large enough to get all the pet's pads AND toenails.  The best impressions are approximately 1/2" thick. Thicker impressions may not bake properly.  Thinner impressions risk breaking during the casting process.

Step 3 - Take The Impression

Place the prepared impression patty on a flat sturdy surface (i.e. plate, clipboard).  Place the pet's paw in the center of the prepared impression patty.  Take the impression by pressing down on the paw - making sure to press down on each of the pads AND each toenail.

It is important that you identify each impression with the pet's name either on the front or the back.

Compare Impression Depth

The depth of the clay impression does matter.  Each pad and toenail should be clearly seen.  Castings will not turn out well if the paw print impression is too shallow.

preferred depth of impression.

Step 4 - Baking Impression

Preheat oven to 275°F.  Place clay impression on a metal baking sheet.  Generally bake clay 15 minutes for every 1/2" thickness of clay.  Check after 15 mins.  Bake an additional 3-5 minutes if necessary.  Impression is done when you cannot press your fingernail into the clay.  Remove from oven and cool completely.

Do not use non-stick spray.
